Former Finance Minister Nina Angelovska was named by the Government on the board of the Macedonian Telekom. Angelovska, owner of an online discount company, had a brief, year long term in office, which was riddled with corruption allegations.
Companies linked to Angelovska received funding from the coronavirus stimulus package and she used inside knowledge to withdraw 250,000 EUR in deposits in the Eurostandard Bank shortly before it collapsed.
Prime Minister Zoran Zaev made no secret of his desire to lead the department himself, and it was only an intervention from the Anti-Corruption Commission that stopped this plan and had him install Angelovska as a placeholder. In office, she happily approved policies that focused the coronavirus response toward programs that favored welfare spending, which the ruling SDSM party clearly linked to demanding support from voters at the July 15 elections.
