AVMS: Charges against journalists for publishing information have negative impact on media freedom

The Agency for Audio and Audio-visual Media Services is concerned about the situation with the freedom of information due to the decision of the Basic Public Prosecutor’s Office to file charges against the journalist and editor-in-chief of the portal “Business Leader” Ljupcho Zlatev for publishing internal documents from the Security Directorate.

Informing about case for possible abuse of certain institution, for which trial is being conducted, is one of the essential tasks of the free and independent media. Such public oversight guarantees accountability and transparency of state bodies.

The agency, as before, urges journalists to respect professional and ethical journalistic standards, to report objectively, impartially, and for institutions to bear in mind that accusations against journalists for publishing information negatively affect media freedom and efforts for public protection interest, informed from AAAMS
