Further promotion of friendly relations with the Russian Federation remains in Macedonia’s special interest, Macedonian President Ivanov says in an interview with the Russian news agency ITAR – TASS, commemorating the 20th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between the two countries.

– After taking the office of president in 2009, I actively involved further promotion of our relations, particularly the cooperation intensification. I am glad that with mutual engagement we have achieved significant results the past five years.

Agreement to include the Republic of Macedonia in the “South Stream” is in our great interest because it will provide energy stability of the country in the coming decades. In this regard, the partnership with the Russian Federation is essential to us, and I personally met several times with Gazprom’s chairman of board Aleksey Miller, who expressed absolute political support for this project and include it in Macedonia.

Following the energy sector, I sincerely hope and expect that we will be able to expand our cooperation in other areas in the future, through implementation of specific projects”, President Ivanov said to ITAR – TASS.

In the interview with ITAR – TASS, Ivanov has announced his presence at the opening of the Winter Olympics in Sochi, as well as the visit to Moscow, where he will give a lecture at the invitation of the renowned and prestigious Lomonosov Moscow State University.

Crucial in bringing the Macedonian and Russian people together, according to Ivanov, is and it needs to be cooperation between the two countries. The recipe, according to the Macedonian President, is cooperation, progressive ideas and monitoring global trends.

– For this cooperation to be successful freedom of movement needs to be ensured, as well as exchange of information, goods, and human potential, educational personnel. So, as Russian citizens can travel freely in Macedonia, I sincerely expect that the Russian Federation will soon establish visa facilitation for Macedonian citizens, Ivanov said in an interview with ITAR – TASS.

Republic of Macedonia and the Russian Federation have established diplomatic relations on 31 January 1994, after the August 4, 1992 when official Moscow has recognized Macedonia as a sovereign and independent state, under its constitutional name.
